MAKING TAX DIGITAL BOOKKEEPING · UK

Making Tax Digital bookkeeping, kept up to date every working day.

Making Tax Digital asks for records kept in software, not on paper or in a pile of receipts. We keep those digital records for you every UK working day, in the software you already use, so your VAT return or quarterly update starts from clean figures.

WHAT MAKING TAX DIGITAL MEANS FOR YOUR BOOKS

The rules are about records, not just returns.

Most people think of Making Tax Digital as a new way to send a return. The bigger change sits underneath. Your records have to be kept in software, and figures have to move from those records to HMRC without being retyped. That only works if the books are kept up to date. That daily work is what we do.

MAKING TAX DIGITAL FOR VAT

VAT records,
kept digitally.

All VAT-registered businesses should now be signed up for Making Tax Digital for VAT, so VAT records are kept in software and the return is sent from it. The same daily routine covers that work, set out on our page on VAT bookkeeping and MTD for VAT records.

MAKING TAX DIGITAL FOR INCOME TAX

Ready for quarterly
updates from day one.

Making Tax Digital for Income Tax covers sole traders and landlords registered for Self Assessment. GOV.UK says those with qualifying income over £50,000 in 2024 to 2025 should have started from 6 April 2026. Those over £30,000 in 2025 to 2026 start from 6 April 2027. Those over £20,000 in 2026 to 2027 start from 6 April 2028. If you let property, see bookkeeping for landlords under MTD and Making Tax Digital for landlords explained.

Once you are in, your software adds up your digital records every three months for each self-employment and property business. These quarterly updates are summaries, not tax returns. The deadlines are 7 August, 7 November, 7 February and 7 May. An update is only as good as the records behind it. If the books are kept daily, there is no scramble at the end of each quarter.

  • Records reconciled before each quarter closes
  • Your quarter-end figures ready to review

THE DAILY ROUTINE

What we do
each working day.

Every UK working day we open your software and work through what has arrived. Bank and card lines are reconciled. Receipts and invoices are matched to the payment they belong to. Anything we cannot place goes on a short list.

With your permission, we watch the finance inbox you agree with us for supplier invoices and receipts. Missing invoices and receipts are followed up, with you or the supplier, in the way you choose. At the end of each month you get a short financial summary in plain English, with any open questions.

  • Finance inbox monitoring
  • Missing invoices and receipts followed up
  • Monthly financial summaries

YOUR SOFTWARE STAYS YOURS

We work in the software
you already use.

Making Tax Digital needs compatible software. You may already have it. We work in Xero, QuickBooks, Sage, FreeAgent, Zoho Books, Clear Books, KashFlow, Pandle, QuickFile, FreshBooks and VT Transaction+, along with capture tools such as Dext, Hubdoc and AutoEntry.

You keep your own subscription, paid by you and separate from our fee. Where the software supports it, you invite us as a user and can remove that access at any time. If you are still on spreadsheets, we can talk through your options on a free call. Our guide on using Excel for Making Tax Digital explains how spreadsheets fit in.

WHAT IS QUOTED SEPARATELY

Records in the package.
Submissions on top.

The monthly packages cover the bookkeeping that Making Tax Digital relies on. Sending things to HMRC is a separate piece of work. Quarterly update submissions for Income Tax, VAT return submission, tax returns, payroll, CIS returns and statutory filings are all quoted separately.

If you keep an accountant for the filing side, we keep the records clean and your accountant reviews and submits from the same software. We agree who does what at the start, so nothing is done twice and nothing is missed.

STARTING FROM BEHIND

Books not ready
for a quarter-end?

If your records are months behind, or still sit on paper and in emails, a quarterly deadline makes that harder to ignore. We review your records first and agree a catch-up plan with a separate quote. Then the daily routine keeps things current from that point on.
